Preprints and publishing

2020 was a watershed moment for publishing when the use of preprints (i.e. articles posted before formal review) became a normalized activity for many researchers. Although used extensively in several communities for many years (e.g. on the ArXiv.org site) it is their use in the biomedical sciences which has proved momentous for publishing. However they are not without problems and this presentation will consider the place of preprints within the academic and conference ecosystem, and consider how they are used – and abused – in the dissemination of research information within academia and among the wider public.
